LWE MIX 226: Scarlett O'Malley

We caught up with Scarlett to chat about her inspirations, the scene at large and more, have a read bellow:

If you could collaborate with any artist dead or alive who would it be?

This is such a horrendously hard one to answer! When you say dead I feel like I should say Elvis because that’s my answer to all dead artist meet up questions, but on a real one I would love to collaborate with Sally C and The Trip, my current favourite producers and we are thinking future forward!

What was the first record you ever bought and does it still influence your music today

In terms of first record ever bought I think it was Spice Girls ’Spiceworld’ when I was like 5 years old. In terms of vinyl I also started relatively young collecting records around 12 and I have a feeling it would have been a Good Charlotte picture disc 45 from HMV, I was obsessed from a young age, say 10. BUT always obsessed with music. I still have my Good Charlotte 45s alongside Maximo Park, The Maccabees and a personally signed Taking Back Sunday 45. I’m not sure any of those mentioned influence my sound today but I am definitely all for GIRL POWER!

What’s your process for finding new music?

I always hit Bandcamp first for finding new tunes; I’ll hit up genre tags and go through the newest releases or what’s doing well. I also have certain producers and labels I check in on once a month to see about new releases. Beatport and Juno DJ charts of DJs I love are always solid and I also make inspo playlists. I also have a big record collection in which I’m always discovering gems from when I’ve bought job lots and the promo inbox always does bits! Love to all my favourite producers for sending me through unreleased bits. You are the real MVPs.

What is one thing about the music scene you’ve seen change since you started?

So much has changed! I suppose one positive thing is there is waaaay more representation amongst line ups now! More women, more LGBTQIA+, more POC, more working class DJs amongst the scene and so on! When I first started going out raving when I was like 17/18 the DJs almost felt untouchable and I never really thought being a DJ was an option for me although I was already buying and collecting records and it wasn’t until someone kind of pushed me to do it that I did because it wasn’t the normal thing for a working class woman to do, so glad to see it!

What is your dream venue to play at?

DC10 Terrace TAKE ME THERE! I’ve been waiting for the call up and I’m happy to be patient but I’ve had so many people tell me post set they can imagine that’s where my sound should be so I’m sure I’ll be @ing them when this comes out x

How has your music style evolved throughout your career?

Next year will be 10 years since I first learnt to DJ! When I first started out I was only playing records, strictly 45s and mainly soul, rockabilly that kind of stuff! I was a ‘I only play vinyl x’ DJ. However I was at parties and raves every weekend and a friend of mine was like why don’t you play house music out but it seemed scary! CDJs are daunting when you first have no clue what they’re about as there is something so intrinsic about the physicality of a turntable. Then around 2018 at a friend's wedding at around 4am I got pushed onto the decks and my first house set was born looool! I bridged the gap between soul and house for quite a long time and now in my current sound, strictly different facets of house music, has been where I’ve been for the last 3 years I’d say!

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you play or heard your productions?

I love a four on the floor heavy kick, groovy bassline pumper, with tons of percussion, a lot of latin infused tech house and a vocal sample is also a MUST! I love taking people on a journey with my sets so maybe starting off a little slower and moodier and raising the tempo with builds and big percussive drops. I love a cheeky nod or ode to a different time that may have been sampled, with my knowledge really starting from the 50s. Loads of bongos and congas, as much groove that will fit and as bouncy as possible; I make music purely for the dancefloor and the dancefloor only! I also love a telephone ring, bird noise and siren in amongst it when I am making music; house influenced by sounds and eras from around the world, literally!

If money wasn’t an issue what would you ask for on your rider?

A tacky souvenir from whatever city I am visiting: the bolder and golder, the better!

Who is the best DJ you’ve ever seen live?

Performance wise, Mr G! His live set is always once of the most amazing things to see: his dance moves, the smoothness, the sounds, I am such a fan! It’s so hard though, I really fell in love with dance music going to see Carl Cox weekly at his Revolution parties at Space in Ibiza while I was doing my seasons. Kerri Chandler in the garden at DC10 was another game changer for me in how much I fell in love with house music. Skream for my uni days at the front of Junk Club each and every time and Laidlaw Gottwood 2023 inspired me so much I made a ton of music when I came home… I can’t choose just one eeep.
